Wash the rice and leave it soaking for 10 minutes. Mince the onion. Have all the spices in the indicated amounts prepared.
Fry the onion in oil until it is browned. Add and saute the spices. Add the rice, stirring for a minute to mix everything.
Lastly add the water, boil uncovered over quick fire until the rice forms holes. Decrease the flame and cover until the water evaporates.
Remove it from flame and let it sit for 10 minutes before eating. Add the salt to taste while cooking.
